Clients in the News–October 2018

Here’s what some of Avalon’s clients are up to this fall!

If you can’t make it to Boston to visit the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in person, good news! The Library has recently uploaded approximately 1,700 digitized rare and fragile photographs from the Kennedy family collection donated by Rose Kennedy. The photos are from the early 1900s through the 1950s and include images from JFK’s childhood with his eight brothers and sisters. They’re like your own family pictures—birthdays, holidays, celebrations, milestones—depicting the everyday lives of America’s most famous political dynasty. Visit the JFKL for more information and to look through this treasure trove.

Have you ever been awestruck by the night sky when you were camping or out on the water at night? We often can’t see the same stars from our own backyards, because light pollution severely limits what we can see of the night sky.  Yellowstone Forever is helping Yellowstone National Park become a “Dark Sky Park”—working to mitigate the artificial light from developed areas (which is hundreds of times brighter than the natural night sky), so that visitors can truly gaze at the stars. Visit Yellowstone Forever’s website to learn more about how you can decrease light pollution around your home and neighborhood, so you can see what’s really up there.

Author, award-winning producer, writer, actress, and stand-up comedian Carol Leifer was presented with Farm Sanctuary’s Animal Advocate Award at FS’s annual Farm Sanctuary on the Hudson Gala in early October. Leifer was honored for her courageous stand against animal cruelty and her commitment to being an animal advocate and vegan. Visit Farm Sanctuary’s website for more information about the event and the tremendous work FS is doing to combat the abuses of factory farming and the ways it is destroying the planet and our health.

Animal lovers in Charles Town, WV, joined the biggest doggy playdate ever on October 21, when the National Humane Education Society and the Briggs Animal Adoption Center held the 20th Annual Adoption Alumni event! Adopters brought their furry companions back for a day of family photos, treats and snacks, and a moving Blessing of the Animals ceremony. Visit NHES’s website for more information on this day of fun.

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence recently held its much-anticipated annual dinner—including the Bear Awards—in memory of Jim “Bear” Brady. The evening, and the Award, honor those who carry on Brady’s legacy in the fight for a safer America through the prevention of gun violence. For more information on the event and the Brady Center’s vital work, please visit the Brady Center’s website.
