Blackbaud recently released its “Charitable Giving Report: How Nonprofit Fundraising Performed in 2014.” Here’s a crib sheet for anyone who needs more time to digest the full report:
NUMBERS TO KNOW:
2.1% increase in overall giving, for 3 years of consecutive growth
8.9% increase in online giving
6.7% of total revenue attributed to online giving
TRENDS TO WATCH CLOSELY:
Scale. Small organizations are seeing larger growth rates than large ones.
News Cycles. There were no large, episodic events (e.g. natural disasters) to drive growth in any of the sectors last year. So the International Affairs sector is actually DOWN 0.4%, which attributes to weaker overall growth for the industry.
Online Revenue. As a percent of total revenue, online is down from 2 years ago and nearly even with 2013.
Online Growth. While 2014 saw overall online growth, there were winners (arts, higher ed, medical research, and public/society) and losers (international, environment/animal, faith, health care, and human services).
