Our vision is to grow a compassionate company of diverse, authentic, and empowered champions who foster a culture that embraces differences every day, and where each Avalonian is supported and inspired to reach their full potential, which in turn will inform and advance our work.
Avalon was founded over two decades ago to create a place for women to have a seat at the table in a male-dominated direct marketing industry. Equity and inclusion are in our DNA, and today we acknowledge that focusing solely on elevating women is not good enough—we must expand our efforts, build from the lessons of our past, and take action towards building a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive company.
We recognize that our work exists within the larger ecosystem of philanthropy — a system that is rooted in white supremacy culture and white saviorism — and there is much to be done to fix the industry as a whole. We have been a leader in changing the face of the direct marketing fundraising industry, and we will continue to be a leader to better reflect our society, our clients, and the people served by our clients’ work. Acknowledging Avalon’s history, and the history of the system in which our work exists is part of our journey.
The four pillars on which we are building our DEI efforts include: Training & Education, Hiring, Culture, and Client Work. While we have already begun moving forward with these efforts, we have no end date, as we see this work as ongoing, evolving, and may never be truly complete. We acknowledge there is imperfection in this space, and we are committed to evolving as a company, learning from both our success and our mistakes, and driving towards a more inclusive future.
