Consumer Confidence continues to improve – the Index now stands at 85.2 (1985=100), up from 82.2 in May.
According to The Conference Board’s Director of Economic Indicators Lynn Franco, “Consumer confidence continues to advance and the index is now at its highest level since January 2008 (87.3). June’s increase was driven primarily by improving current conditions, particularly consumers’ assessment of business conditions. Expectations regarding the short-term outlook for the economy and jobs were moderately more favorable, while income expectations were a bit mixed. Still, the momentum going forward remains quite positive.”
The trending upward tick in consumer confidence, backed up by the recent GivingUSA report on increases in individual giving in 2013, certainly appears to bode well for fundraising. Welcome news as we plan for the busy fall, holiday, and year-end giving season!
The American Film Institute kicked off its 2014 Documentary Festival on Wednesday, June 18 at the Newseum in downtown Washington, DC, with a screening of Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey. The film, directed by Scott Teems, depicts the life and work of actor Hal Holbrook. Holbrook began portraying legendary American writer Mark Twain in 1954, and, for the past 60 years, he has continued his role in the award-winning one man show, “Mark Twain Tonight!.” In the film, Teems tells the story of the show, from its beginnings to its appearance on international stages, Broadway, and television. He examines Holbrook’s deep appreciation and understanding of Twain’s timeless wit, advice, and satire, and the ways in which his performances ensure Twain’s lasting legacy on American culture.
Avalon team members Dara Igersheim and Lucy Quinn attended the film screening and volunteered for AFI during the event. AFI Director Bob Gazzale opened the evening with remarks introducing Teems, who spoke about the film. Later, Holbrook himself (pictured below) spoke to the audience and described his joy and ongoing appreciation for the making of the film. The Avalon team is always excited to actively participate in AFI DOCS and to see the amazing work AFI has accomplished as a result of the contributions of donors and AFI members.

On March 14 at NTEN’s 2014 Nonprofit Technology Conference, the Integrated Marketing Advisory Board (IMAB) named the League of Women Voters of the United States a winner in its third annual Integrated Marketing Awards. The Integrated Marketing Awards recognized three nonprofit organizations that show exemplary leadership in the area of integrated marketing, and exemplify the sector’s successful use of integrated, multi-channel marketing campaigns or programs.
A nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, The League won in the category called The Organization, demonstrating how an effort across the nonprofit aligned strategy, structure, culture, and skills to impact the organization’s ability to integrate its marketing efforts. The League was awarded this prestigious prize for creating a successful, broad-based marketing campaign involving all departments within the organization.
